NFC Likely Coming to iPhone 5

Passbook for iOS 6

The tech blogsphere made (and still is) many predictions about the upcoming iPhone 5.  With claims ranging from a 4" screen to the new 9-pin dock connector. However, one new item receiving the least acclaim is the potential to include Near Field Communication.

NFC could give iPhone the ability to make touch-and-go payments at points of sale. However, touch-and-go payments are boring and actually old technology, so why is it a great additional feature? Apple has several patents, clearly linked to their Passbook app, that could enable users to hold e-tickets for flights, concerts, and movies. An additional patent would allow the user to control a NFC enabled living room - all the way down to dimming the lights and much more.

In my article, I make the argument NFC is coming to iPhone 5 based on the relocation of the forward facing FaceTime camera and headphone jack in the new model. There is not really a good reason to move those features other than making room for the NFC chip. This is an exciting prediction, which can be found in my article on www.idownloadblog.com.
